    Citation needed.

Even our Active-Active cluster boxes have redundant power supplies plugged into seperate electrical circuits and wired to independant UPSes, never mind our Active-Passive cluster solutions...

The fact is, most data centers do go for maximum redundancies without single points of failure on the hardware side.

When you have a massively parallele solution with custom software that is built to run on non-redundant hardware like Google built with their search engine, yeah, you can afford to skimp on hardware. They don't care if 1 node out of their 10000 fails, and the software doesn't see the impact. But that 1 specialised custom application is not an industry standard and is far from the norm in building data centers.

The fact is, the Xserve wasn't selling well and it had all the server features. A rackable Mac Pro would sell even less to those Xserve buyers. Forget redundant power supplies if you don't believe in them, just lack of LOM or hot-swap drives is a killer by itself.

And seriously, Thunderbolt ? Host based storage ? Forget that, to get into my data center, you need multi-path Fiber Channel. Thank god at least Apple recognizes that and offers the option on the Mac Pro. Thunderbolt is not a SAN technology and it's not replacing SANs anytime soon. I don't want to manage hundreds of storage arrays for each hosts. I want to manage 1 unified storage array and then present LUNs to my hosts as needed. That way, I get better distribution of my existing storage and can even manage some over-provisionning depending on the technology I use.

A lot of people here never worked with enterprise-grade systems. A rackable Mac Pro would at best be used as someone else stated, to rack along video/audio equipement in a studio. Not to rack into a data center.

I work for a school district and even we go for redundant PS when possible, especially on our ESX boxes. Believe it or not though we are still gigabit to our SAN and while Fiber Channel may be awesome in this scenario do you not think Thunderbolt would have the throughput for say, a DAS box? Then again, we aren't as demanding in our environment. ESX is nice in this way because its all of our servers (well, almost all virtualized) and one Equallogic.

I'm so sick of the tree hugging, let's all play nice and help everyone out attitude. How about the slackers get off their @$$ and do something for themselves.

Welcome to MacRumors! Home of the bleeding left. :D

Personally, I love how Apple is spanking everyone. Jobs is a visionary, and to argue differently is being ignorant.

Sad thing, there doesn't seem to be anyone else on the horizon to fill that void when he is gone. As Howard Stern or Robin mentioned on the air a couple of weeks ago, Steve is the Thomas Edison of our/my generation.

The tablet, of course, never saw the light of day... though its unclear why Apple never released the tablet

Maybe because there isn't a market for one, or at least a market of the size Apple would be interested in. Tablet PC, PDA, etc., is just another way of saying crippled computer and particularly in the case of the tablet PC, the dimensional savings aren't that significant compared to, say, a 13-inch Macbook which is obviously a full-fledged computer with keyboard. Microsoft has made numerous forays into the tablet PC space and all have been stillborn. It's another classic case of form over function and a smattering of interested geeks and gadget hounds doesn't translate into mass market consumer interest.

If there is anything to this, it's probably some sort of next gen iPod with better video capabilities (screen size) then than the present generation - assuming the iTunes video store experiment has paid off enough to warrant a more video oriented portable media player.

But an Apple tablet PC? Dream on.

Well most people attach those hard drive thingies on the bottom, which makes it a little taller anyway.

I think you should go get your prostate checked.

Next time I go in for a physical, I'll make sure to get it checked out, after the MBP w/C2D becomes available. I am beginning to get up there in years. :)

Apple's marketing strategy has always been that the PowerBooks (MacBook Pro) have faster processers then any of the iMac offerings. The Conroe and Allendale (Desktop) chips run faster then the Merom (Mobile) chips.

I'm not sure that's true. They had the G5 in the iMac and it was never in the Powerbook. When the Intel iMac was released it was running the same CPUs as the 15" MacBook Pro that was released at the same time. They are very different products so the differentiation is built in.

I would really like to see Apple have a laptop cheaper than $1,100, and I think there would be a definite market for the, especially for teenagers looking into getting a Mac. I know that's unlikely, but...
Anyways I hope that the MBPs get the processor update (and a new enclosure) very soon and I really hope the MBs and Mac Minis follow soon after.
I don't get any reason for Apple not too, and I think with Intel it would be possible for Apple to get some cheaper computers out there. It would be nice, but seems unlikely.... *sighs*

If you have a big refund, it means that you pay too much, so you are not being very good at your day to day application of math.

Yea, I know if you receive a refund, you gave the gov't an interest free loan and all that. I was just making light of the topic.....as most people like to get an unexpected amt back vs owe..even if it isn't the smartest in terms of financial sense for them

Also when you say American do you refer to any citizen in the American continent or just the people that was born in the United States of America.

What do you think in the context I had written it?

how about frontrow and Apple remote?

i know this is a pro machine...

but having these built-in would be great

besides... SJ mentioned that frontrow would be enhanced in Leopard

does this mean that the new Mac Pro would have frontrow as well?

The past year my right eye's vision has decreased. Interestingly enough that is around when i got my iphone 4, can lack of my eye working and the phone making it easier make my vision worse? Probably not and just a coincidence.

Anyway i wonder if apple will do the whole "It is a 500$ upgrade for retina" thing or it will just be a thing all mbp's have.

So, how is MacShrine perceived in the rumor community? Do they have a sufficiently good track record for us to say, "this is it - the Merom MBP is finally coming", or is this likely to be just another rehash of all the Core2Duo MBP hype/frustration going around?

Why does everyone want Apple to change the enclosure of the MBP when it's already perfect?

It's time for a new enclosure. The one used right now is from the PowerBook G4 days and goes back to 2003.

More importantly, the MacBook Pro's hinge design limits how far the display can open. Just about every other laptop has a screen that can open 180. Secondly, while it's not horrible, the MacBook Pro display needs to have a wider viewing angle. It's VERY HARD to replace the MBP's hard drive. I don't want to see a magnetic latch. I would prefer to see something more in-line with the clamshell iBook, which snapped shut.

Those are just a few things.

Apple needs to create a whole new MacBook Pro to deal with heat issues alone. Having that battery inset in the middle must be a nightmare on the logic board designers. And Apple must be paying a fortune to repair the MBP because it's so intricate and hard to get into.

    How so?

The current method is "the OS DVD you buy can be used anywhere, as often as you like, forever."

How could it be worse than that?

The licence is only for one computer.

If you want to install it on a different machine you must uninstall the original copy first.

    The Mac App Store says:

"You can install apps on every Mac you use and even download them again."

That implies that if I go on a friend's computer for 5 minutes once a year I could install Lion on it for no charge.

Apple had the same problem with the original LISA UI. It was so simplistic that they lost the lawsuits. Same may happen here.

That's not at all what happened.

Looking at the TouchWiz UI, I see your point.

But, at what point does an interface become too generic? For example, the concept of pages of icons in a grid isn't really new or innovative. The concept of swiping across screens is simple and intuitive and should be copied for that exact reason. Should other phone makers put the icons in a circle, "just because" they need to be different? Should they force you to do something differently just because the best and most intuitive way was "already taken"?

Everyone loves car analogies, so: what if Ford decided to sue other carmakers because they copied their steering wheel design? Would other companies have been forced to adopt other types of controls -- joysticks or dials or foot pedals, perhaps -- "just because"? And would that have been good for the auto industry?

I sort of understand where you are coming from, but with a mobile device (or other computer), a major part of the design is the user interface and manufacturers should be able to protect that design. HTC have managed to make an interface that is in many ways better than iOS, but instead of any innovation at all, Samsung have just copied it.

BTW, Early car design innovations were patented and the designers licensed them to other manufacturers.

Iphone? I just can't see it... It will kill their ipod sales - it will be like shooting themselves in the foot. The reason is that all phones are now free with a contract - we have difficulty in having any value in our phones nowadays.. if you had a free iphone with a contract which had ipod facilities then why would you buy an ipod? It just doesnt make sense.. unless they ONLY sell it sim free. If they do bring one out then i'll certainly buy one, but I am not sure that it is such a good idea... I'd rather they produced a phone/pda hybrid like the xda - I think that this would fit better into their existing product portfolio..

or most people (like me) want to carry around one device that will do everything, I could listen to music but when I need to I'd grab it and make a call. in the future everything is going to come in one product, apple is seeing the future now and jumping in it feet first

just imagine microsoft "here is the zune! it has wifi! hey hey haaaaaaay" enter steve jobs "heres the award winning ipod...oh by the way ring ring ring it's a phone, PDA, carries files, and has bluetooth"
microsoft "well....at least we have vista!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
    jobs: "when?"
    microsoft "isn't the zune great!"

and how would it kill ipod sales? more than likely it would take the place of something such as the shuffle.

and they are taking away from ipod sales...yeah from themselves thats like saying the macbooks are taking sales away from the macbook pros...does it really matter? all looks the same at the quarterly report $$$$$$

if I had the iphone my way it'd have these features

able to sync to my mac with ical ect
    a easy to use interface
    ichat
video ichat...this could be a cool idea, the camera isn't to big on the laptops and what not, they could squeeze that into the enclosure and have mobile video chat...it'd be cool....it'd be a wholel new way to have phone sex at least  :D ;)
    firm feel
    sexy look
and a good keypad I HATE the keypad on the razr and such

I wish they'd release a phone like the iTalk commercial, I don't like the dual flip though, have that as a normal flip phone and you are right on the money about a BA product (badass)

Honestly, I hope Toyota tells Apple to stuff it.
Too late. They already agreed to pull it.
I was more disappointed in Cydia's public response to the request. If the want to appear more legitimate, they should assume that conversations with 'clients' are confidential.

BTW - Apple can reasonably be expected to want iOS to be portrayed in a specific light. I think it's fine for Apple to have asked for the take down, so long as they did not threaten to take action against Toyota.

I think amazon and the kindle are the only legitimate competitors to the ipad/itunes store. And I don't know if they are really direct competitors.

Anyway, amazon's kindle and overall user experience are not direct rip offs of Apple and that is refreshing.
