With a proposed sign-and-trade deal falling apart in Toronto, Matt Barnes has elected to take less money to contend for a title in Los Angeles. Barnes agreed to a 2-year, $3.6 million contract. The Lakers also added veteran shot blocker Theo Ratliff.
The Breakdown
For the Lakers, these are 2 great players that improve their bench. For fantasy owners, Barnes and Ratliff will largely be non-factors next season.
Barnes will come off the bench and relieve Ron Artest. While he could see extended minutes because of his defensive ability, I doubt those minutes turn into any real fantasy production as the Lakers are loaded with offensive talent. Barnes showed some promise last season when he stepped into the starting line up for the Magic, but his return to a back up role means he's strictly a deep league option.
In addition to Barnes, the Lakers have added the well traveled Ratliff. Ratliff's known around the league for his ability to block shots in limited minutes. With the Lakers, I'm not sure Ratliff sees much playing time. Still, if you're in a category based league, you can pick up Ratliff off the waiver wire if he's getting steady playing time and you'll see an instant boost to your blocks. Just don't expect much else from him.
